What is the Entourage Effect?

The entourage effect is the theory that the different compounds found in cannabis work better together than they do on their own. These compounds include:

  • Cannabinoids (such as THC and CBD)
  • Terpenes (the compounds responsible for aroma and flavour)
  • Flavonoids (plant compounds that may contribute to therapeutic effects)

The term “entourage effect” was first introduced by Ben-Shabat and colleagues in 1988.

Types of Entourage Effects

Researchers describe two main types of entourage effects:

Intra-entourage effects

  1. Interactions between compounds of the same type.
  2. For example, cannabinoid-to-cannabinoid interactions or terpene-to-terpene
    interactions.

Inter-entourage effects

  1. Interactions between different types of compounds.
  2. For example, cannabinoids working together with terpenes.

  3. The theory suggests several ways these compounds may enhance each other’s effects:

How the Entourage Effect may work

The theory suggests several ways these compounds may enhance each other’s effects

  1. Terpenes may influence THC’s effects
Some terpenes could help reduce THC-related anxiety, promote
    relaxation, or improve focus.
  2. Cannabinoids may balance each other
CBD, for example, may lessen some of the intoxicating or unwanted
    effects of THC.
  3. More receptors may be activated
Full-spectrum cannabis products contain multiple compounds that may
act on a wider range of receptors throughout the body than a single
    isolated compound.
  4. Compounds may affect metabolism
Some cannabis compounds can influence the enzymes responsible for
breaking down other compounds, potentially altering how quickly
effects begin and how long they last.

Current Evidence

There is growing scientific evidence that cannabinoids and terpenes can interact and influence each other’s effects. However, the entourage effect has not yet been conclusively proven. While research supports the possibility of synergistic interactions, more human studies are needed to determine which specific combinations produce particular therapeutic outcomes.

Key Takeaway

The entourage effect is the idea that cannabis compounds may work together to produce greater or different effects than any single compound alone. Although research is promising, scientists are still investigating exactly how these interactions occur and which combinations are most beneficial.
